Though its main visitors are now hikers on the trail, the mine originally boasted over 160 employees and was a critical locus for zinc exports. The Allmannajuvet zinc mines in Sauda, Ryfylke, were in operation from 1881 to 1899. The mining operations brought life to the village with as many as 168 employees and the export of ore on ships heading abroad. The operation was a forerunner of subsequent hydroelectric development and industrialisation in Sauda in Ryfylke. Today, the mining area is a museum. Our project was commissioned by the Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, to commemorate the almost forgotten history of the zinc The ‘allmannajuvet’ site will tell the story of the region’s zinc mines that were in operation between 1881 and 1899, a practice that employed as many as 168 workers from the nearby village. In an agreement with the Norwegian public roads administration, Sauda municipality assumes responsibility for site’s operations, upkeep, and maintenance. 2017-06-02 · Zumthor designed a series of buildings for the site of the former Allmannajuvet zinc mines in Sauda, and they opened to the public for the first time in late 2016. Handles of rough forged zinc are the first things visitors touch as they enter each structure, a reminder of the utility, beauty and tactile power of this often disregarded metal.
