There is enough intrigue involving Le Père Goriot (French pronunciation: [lə pɛʁ ɡɔʁjo], "Old Goriot" or "Father Goriot") is an 1835 novel by French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), included in the Scènes de la vie privée section of his novel sequence La Comédie humaine. Goriot, an uneducated, but prosperous businessman has allowed his daughters to suck his coffers dry by acceding to their never-ending requests for money to support their extravagant lifestyles. Balzac’s character studies are razor sharp and unsparing, yet not without a sense of humor. Balzac carefully shows us how in Père Goriot a wealthy merchant's passion has grown and has overwhelmed him. From then on, the old man lives only for his daughters, adding sacrifice to sacrifice, bleeding himself of his money and of his life, and, when finally there remains nothing to give, he withers and dies.
