Multimodal analgesic techniques also help prevent the phenomenon known as wind-up. Multimodal techniques for pain management include the administration of two or more drugs that act by different mechanisms for providing analgesia, and regional analgesia techniques. The drugs may be administered via the same route or by different routes, and the choice of medication, dose, route, and duration of therapy should be individualized. Multimodal analgesia is a component of many care pathways or Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols. The assumption is that combining various nonopioid analgesics will reduce the need for opioids and consequently opioid-related complications. A comparison of multimodal perioperative analgesia to epidural pain management after gastric bypass surgery.

The pharmacological therapeutic approach of multimodal analgesia includes all the frontline drugs available, used alone or in combination according to the specific needs of the patient [ 19 ]. Drugs for pain control fall into four main categories [ 20 ]: weak analgesics (paracetamol and metamizole) Multimodal (or 'balanced') analgesia represents an approach to preventing postoperative pain where the patient is adminis …. Postoperative pain is a complex and multifactorial symptom that requires a thoughtful approach using a variety of treatment modalities to obtain an optimal outcome after surgery. Acute and chronic pain management in children is increasingly characterized by either a multimodal or a preventive analgesia approach, in which smaller doses of opioid and nonopioid analgesics, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, local anaesthetics, N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonists, α2-adrenergic agonists, and voltage-gated calcium channel α-2 δ-proteins, are combined alone and in

In this review, we present the basis for multimodal analgesia in a general context, next in the setting of the opioid crisis, and finally focusing on perioperative pain management for orthopedic surgery. Multimodal analgesia may include pharmacological components such as regional anesthesia, opioid and nonopioid systemic analgesics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, and a variety of adjuvant agents. Multimodal analgesia has been reported for a variety of surgical procedures but not yet for lower limb amputation in vasculopathic patients. multimodal analgesia refers to systemic administration of analgesic drugs with different mechanisms of action, whereas in other situations it refers to concurrent application of analgesic pharmacotherapy in combination with regional analgesia. Multimodal analgesia is a term that refers to the use of several different analgesic medications or techniques simultaneously, to target multiple receptors within nociceptive and neuropathic pathways, thus reducing acute postoperative pain and the surgical stress response, as well as potentially impacting the mechanistic chain of events that can lead to chronic postoperative pain [ 4 ].
